Few days in summer and hair feels dry and dull. As we go out in the mighty sun the hair fries up and loses its shine and luster. We often wonder if we know rightly WHAT and HOW to take care of our hair in the heat of summer. Here you will read 10 hair care tips you can try and keep your locks healthy, shiny and flowing.
1. Get those locks trim.
Hair looks refreshed after you trim the dry and split ends. Even, you can go for a fresh haircut, leaving hair length worries aside as hair grows faster in summers because Anagen (Hair growing phase in hair growth cycle) is naturally accelerated in summers. Warm Weather eases out the warm blood in body so the blood flow is increased towards upward, means more nutrients reaching out and helping hair to grow faster.
2. Before going out.
Quickly getting ready after bath? No time to dry hair, thinking the breeze outside will do the job of drying your hair? Leaving your home with wet hair is a torture you are doing to your beautiful hair. Hair absorbs water easily and due to which the outer layer of hair (Cuticle) opens. If you go out with wet hair your hair is prone to damage. Invest a few extra minutes to dry your hair every time you wash, to keep your hair beautiful, forever.
3. Dry them like a baby bum.
This goes with both men and women. After shampoo we start torturing our hair with 3rd degree. Stop doing it right away. It is our precious hair, our crown, don’t treat them roughly. Rubbing them against towel or spanking hair with towel will not dry but kill hair. Best way to dry hair at home is to squeeze the water out of hair and gently dab the towel against hair to soak the water out. Rubbing damages the outer layer of hair (Cuticle) which is also known as the protecting layer of the hair.
4. Conditioning is essential.
As we all know how important it is to condition our hair after the shampoo. But most of us miss or neglect this step (with a common excuse – NO TIME). Conditioner helps you restore moisture and nourishes hair. Get the one that suits your hair concern. Do ask your stylist to guide you selecting the right home care as per your hair’s need. While using the right conditioner it is important to know how to use it properly for the best results.
After shampoo, squeeze the water from hair or towel dry your hair. Now apply conditioner starting from ends going upward. Most of the people don’t apply it properly on the hair at nape. so don’t forget the nape. Here my suggestion is, after applying the conditioner, instead of waiting for 3 to 5 minutes, comb your hair with the wide tooth comb. it will help spreading the conditioner evenly and will get the optimum result. after 3 to 5 minutes rinse with cold water. VIOLA!
5. Treat like a Baby.
In-salon hair treatments are best for that one step extra care for the precious hair. Most of the salon treatments repair hair from inside by penetrating the outer layer of hair (Cuticle). Treatments will restore the pH of hair and provide necessary nutrients (when done specific to the need of hair, like repair, brittle hair, dry hair, unmanageable hair, frizzy hair colored hair etc.) and condition hair from deep.
At your next salon visit, you can add a treatment to the specific need or opt for Hair spa. Hair spa makes hair soft, hydrated, easy to manage, and shiny. And don’t forget the relaxing massage you get to regulate the blood flow and ease out the stress.
6. Cover the Locks.
Often hairstylists suggest to use some protecting cream or serum for hair which will give shine and control to hair while protecting hair from harmful UV rays, pollution etc. But we usually neglect or misunderstand the agenda as sales pitch. Hairstylist are learned professionals. Learning and practicing never stops for a hairstylist. Here my request to you is trust your stylist whole heartedly.
There are a plenty of brands offering hair creams and serum with different texture, viscosity, smell, color etc. Take your stylist’s suggestion to choose the right product for your hair. My Personal choices are L’Oreal Professionnel Liss Control Cream which is ideal for smoothing and controlling unruly, frizzy or rebellious hair and L’Oreal Professionnel Absolute Repair Serum (also helps with split ends repair)
7. Don’t forget the shield.
When sun hits hard in summer, it is essential to carry a head scarf, cap, hat or anything which keeps your hair from direct sun exposure. It also helps your scalp to retain moisture while protecting hair from harmful UV rays. Covering up will also help to protect hair from heavy wind specially if hair tangles easily.
8. Cold Shower.
Showering with cold water can do wonders on the skin and hair both. Cold water closes the pores on skin to avoid dust and pollution to enter. Same way it seals the cuticle which is the outer layer of hair in order to make hair appear shinier, stronger, heathier and less frizzy. And in hot summer morning, cold shower is a refreshing way to start the day. If you are a hot shower person, try pouring cold water on your hair after finishing bath. A small change might help.
9. Colored hair.
With great hair comes great responsibility. When you give that magic look with beautiful color but no proper home care. It is like buying a nice branded dress but not ironing and complaining about creases. Proper home care and treatments are must for the colored hair people. It will help your color last longer due to reduced oxidization. Results in shinier, smooth and healthy looking hair.
10. Lifestyle.
A good night sleep, healthy diet and regular exercise help improve hair quality. If you are not eating right, money spent on other things might not work 100%. Often our diet lacks zinc and iron. Do keep a check if you are eating enough of it. Few good sources for zinc and iron are Legumes, seeds (Pumpkin, flex, squash seeds etc.), nuts, whole grain, vegetables, etc.
